Enhance Your Skills

Once you feel comfortable with the basic skills of setting up a loom and following a weaving pattern, the following courses can help you move to the next level.

Weft-Faced Weaving

Whereas plain weave and many twills show equal amounts of warp and weft, weft-faced weaving showcases your weft by covering up the warp. These weaves create a thick fabric suitable for mats, wall hangings, or tote bags.  Also, because warp threads are widely spaced, dressing the loom goes more quickly and you can focus your time on constructing your cloth.

Students should have some prior weaving experience. Warps will be provided and each student will dress the loom with guidance from the instructor.

Course Duration: Two partial days and one full day. Weekend classes meet on Friday afternoon or evening, all day Saturday and a half day on Sunday.

Course Fee: $130

Fee includes instruction, use of a floor loom, and all supplies and materials.

2024 offering: January 19, 20, 21.

Huck Lace - More than Four

Expanding the basic huck threading block to more than four shafts allows for multiple variations on the same threading.  This is a great introduction to 6 or 8 shaft weaving and how changing the tie up of your treadles can impact the face of your cloth.  Huck lace fabric can be used in curtains, towels, yardage, even as a base for surface embroidery.

Students should have some prior weaving experience including a basic understanding of weaving drafts and tie up charts. Understanding of the huck lace weave structure is helpful, but not required. Changing tie ups requires the ability to sit on the floor and work under the loom. Warps will be provided and each student will dress the loom with support from the instructor.

Course Duration: Two partial days and one full day. Weekend classes meet on Friday afternoon or evening, all day Saturday and a half day on Sunday.

Course Fee: $150

Fee includes instruction, use of a floor loom, and all supplies and materials. A non-refundable $30 deposit secures your spot in the class.

2024 offering: Available by request.

For students who are interested in planning a design from scratch, this class covers the steps involved in project design.

Table runner woven in huck lace

Huck Lace on Four Shafts

Historically showcased in monochromatic linen table runners, towels or napkins, huck lace offers much more opportunity for creative exploration. With options for warp floats, weft floats, and color variations the combinations possible with this weave structure seem almost endless. Huck lace fabric can be used in curtains, towels, yardage, even as a base for surface embroidery.

The in-class project will feature a holiday table runner. Students will have the option of an Autumn or Christmas color scheme.

Students should have some prior weaving experience. Understanding of the huck lace weave structure is helpful, but not required. Warps will be provided and each student will dress the loom with support from the instructor.
